In this session, the speaker will discuss Yasashii Nihongo, or plain and compassionate Japanese, which is rapidly becoming a popular means of communication with foreign residents in Japan, particularly among local governments. The talk will focus on his activities with students in a seminar at Meiji University to promote its use across various sectors, including municipal governments, schools, businesses, and local residents.

We will present the different teaching practices in mainstream and distance education settings in Australia and how Japanese language pedagogy differs between Australia and China. The session will introduce contemporary Japanese language teaching practices to Japanese language teachers and researchers and foster a reflection on how we could deliver Japanese language and culture to students in a more authentic and engaging style.

This session will focus on Dialogic Language Assessment (DLA), with insights drawn from its trial implementation in Japanese-English bilingual primary schools in Australia. We will explore how DLA can more effectively and reliably measure and assess students' Japanese language skills. The future practical implications of DLA across different educational sectors will also be provided.

Empowering Asian Language Speakers Symposium

The symposium will evaluate the current system for becoming qualified language teachers, address PD needs and training opportunities for teachers of Asian languages, address problems surrounding opportunities for anyone in Australia within the education system for language learning (particularly those with Asian language background), and propose a change to increase the number of qualified teachers in Australian schools.
