CHIN2700 Chinese to English Translation: An Introductory Course
CHIN2700 is a 4-week-intensive course: 2 hours per day x 3 days per week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday). This course introduces to students the fundamental skills in Chinese to English translation through a variety of media and genres, both oral and written, drawn from sources including television, film, and formal and informal written texts. This course has a maximum quota of 145 students and enrolment will be granted to the first 145 students who enrol via mySI-net. Please note, the maximum quota is for the Summer Semester 2025/2026 offering only.

CHIN2750 - Fundamentals in English & Chinese Translation in the Age of AI
CHIN2750 is a 4-week-intensive course: 2 hours per day x 3 days per week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday). This course introduces students to basic principles, theories and approaches in English to Chinese translation, and learn to apply these in a diverse range of genres, including news, business, science and technology, law, and literature. With hands-on practice with cutting-edge MT/AI tools to enhance the translation process, students will gain both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in English to Chinese translation.
This course has a maximum quota of 130 students and enrolment will be granted to the first 130 students who enrol via mySI-net. Please note, the maximum quota is for the Summer Semester 2025/2026 offering only.

English as an International Language
WRIT1001: Writing for International Students
WRIT1001 supports undergraduate students who use English as a second language (including international and eligible domestic students). The course builds the core skills needed to participate confidently in academic life: academic English, digital literacy, critical thinking, and referencing.
The Summer Semester course is intensive and taught in a blended format, combining live tutorials via Zoom with online activities. All online content is hosted on the UQExtend learning platform. The program runs over four weeks, with four hours of classes on Mondays and two hours on Wednesdays.
Group 1 - Monday 10am, Monday 12pm, Wednesday
Group 2- Monday 12pm, Monday 2pm, Wednesday 12pm
Group 3 - Monday 2pm, Monday 4pm, Wednesday, 2pm

French
FREN1020 - Introductory French 2
FREN1020 Introductory French 2 is for students who have already completed FREN1010 or have an equivalent level of French. Students who pass the summer course will be able to continue on to Intermediate level in FREN2010 in 2025.
Summer Semester French is intensive: 4 hours per day x 4 days per week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; 9am–11am; 12pm–2pm) for 3 weeks. Each day of class corresponds to a week of work in the equivalent semester 2 course. You need to have time, and you need to be committed! But previous students have described the intensity and immersion as motivating and stimulating and said that they felt part of a French-speaking mini-community.
- Level: Students who have passed FREN1010, or students who are placed directly into FREN1020 (check eligibility)

- Mode: FREN1020 is offered both In-person and External (online via Zoom). If numbers permit, the cohort will split into an in-person group and an online group. If we cannot split the cohort, the course will be taught in dual delivery – your tutors are confident that we can get you talking across the in-person /online modes.

Japanese
Summer Semester Japanese is intensive: 4 hours per day x 3 days per week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) for 4 weeks, followed by assessment in the fifth week. Students also need to allow time for study on the days they do not have class. The courses cover a lot of ground in a short period, but students have reported enjoying working with their cohorts to make rapid gains in Japanese. Many students also use these courses as a springboard to travelling or working in Japan.
Any class that falls on a public holiday will be rescheduled, and updated class times can be found on students’ individual timetables.
