We are happy to announce the 6th International Conference on Discourse, Culture & Interaction that provides a forum for researchers in the areas of Pragmatics, (Applied) Linguistics, Discourse Studies among others to share their research. We welcome submissions from established scholars as well as early career researchers – including Honours, MA and PhD researchers.

Abstracts are invited for papers on any topic relevant to pragmatics, qualitative discourse analysis, culture and interaction, including but not limited to:

  • Social action in interaction;
  • Identity construction;
  • Multilingual communities;
  • L2 pragmatics;
  • Intercultural/cross-cultural studies;
  • Humour;
  • (Im)politeness studies;
  • Digital communication

The conference is free of charge for presenters and attendees. The conference will be held in-person at The University of Queensland, St. Lucia campus.

Presentation types

  • Standard presentations (20 minutes + 10 minutes for Q&A)
  • Work-in-progress presentations (15 minutes + 5 minutes for Q&A)

Keynote speaker

Associate Progessor Lili Gong, Guangdong University

Lili Gong is an Associate Professor at the Center for Linguistics and Applied Linguistics and the School of English Education, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. Her research interests include pragmatics, English for Specific Purposes and second language writing. She has been researching interpersonal and interactional pragmatics in mediated communication. Her recent research has focused on im/politeness, emotion/affect, and morality in social media settings. She is especially interested in how language is used and shaped by digital technology affordances and how multimodal dimensions of digital communication reshape conventional understandings of im/politeness, emotional display and moral positioning in online contexts.
