Border-Crossing Australian and Japanese Literature: Literary Exchange as Cultural Diplomacy

Hours of engagement & delivery mode

20 hours per week for 4 weeks

Offered through a hybrid arrangement.

Description:

This project aims to produce a book proposal (edited collection) based on the symposium Border-Crossing Australian and Japanese Literature: Literary Exchange as Cultural Diplomacy to be held on 29 and 30 June 2023. The project explores the recent surge of interest in contemporary Australia-Japan literary exchange in three types of literary border crossing: Japanese literary works with Australia-related themes; Australian literary works with Japan-related themes; and Australian literary works in Japanese translation. In addition to providing some basic support to organise the symposium, applicants are expected to collect relevant research materials and produce an annotated bibliography to support the preparation of the book proposal and a couple of sample chapters.

Expected outcomes and deliverables:

Applicants can expect to gain skills in research materials collection, including how to organise the collected materials, and become familiarised with the process of writing a book proposal.

Suitable for:

This project is open to applications from students with advanced proficiency in the Japanese language as well as interest in Australian and Japanese literature and research. Experience in translation between English and Japanese is desirable.
