5. Eye tracking in bilingualism research with less-commonly researched languages.

Project title:

Eye tracking in bilingualism research with less-commonly researched languages.

Hours of engagement & delivery mode

4 weeks (Monday 26 June – Friday 21 July 2023)

Hours of engagement: 20 hours/week

Candidates will be required to be on-campus for weekly meetings.

Description:

This project examines how learners of Japanese process sentences incrementally using web-based eye-tracking.

Eye-tracking of the visual world paradigm is a widely used method in psycholinguistics, offering millisecond-precise information about how language users orient their visual attention as they process language. This measure drives advances in our understanding of second-language sentence processing. More recently, researchers increasingly turn to web-based methods for collecting experimental data. This project

assesses the utility of web-based experimentation as an alternative to lab-based eye-tracking.

In this project, scholars will be involved in developing some of the initial stages of eye-tracking research. In Winter Research (2023) in particular, a scholar will work on stimuli development and stimulus-presentation design

Expected outcomes and deliverables:

Scholar gain hands on experience in designing and conducting psycholinguistic experiments.

Suitable for:

Undergraduate 2nd-4th year students, honours’ students or 1st-year postgraduate students with a background in linguistics, applied linguistics, Japanese or related majors. Preferences will be given to those who are interested in doing bilingual research in languages other than English.
