The UQ Winter Research Scholarship Program offers scholarships to students wishing to gain experience working alongside a researcher in a formal research environment in their area of interest at UQ.

Each project will be offered for a period of four (4) weeks between Monday 26 June – Friday 21 July 2023.

Participation is open to undergraduate (including honours) and master by coursework students who are currently enrolled and will remain at UQ for the entirety of the research program.

Empowering Asian language speakers to become language teachers in Australian schools

Hours of engagement & delivery mode

4 weeks from 26 June to 21 July. 25 hours per week.

Winter Research Scholars can work from home but are required to attend regular face-to-face meetings.

They are also required to attend a one-day symposium at UQ on July 3

Description:

This is part of a large project on Asian language teaching in Australian schools. One-day symposium will be held at UQ on 3 July, which is funded by the Asian Studies Association of Australia. The symposium will 1) evaluate the current system for becoming qualified language teachers of Asian languages; 2) address problems surrounding opportunities for native and heritage speakers within the education system for language learning; and 3) propose a change to increase the number of qualified teachers in Australian schools. This project provides document analysis and literature review on teaching and learning of six major Asia languages in Australia —Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese.

 

Expected outcomes and deliverables:

The expected outcomes of this project include documentation of language policy and planning in relation to the six Asian languages in Australian education system and literature review on the languages in the fields of language policy and language teaching.

Suitable for:

This project is suitable for students who have studied Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese and/or Korean at UQ as well as students who are background/heritage speakers of the languages. Applicants should have strong analytical skills in English and organisational skills.
