8. Socio-pragmatic understanding of (im)politeness in Korean discourse

Project title:

Socio-pragmatic understanding of (im)politeness in Korean discourse

Hours of engagement & delivery mode

  • 4 weeks; 25 hours per week
  • The project will be offered through a hybrid arrangement of on-site and online meetings.

Description:

This project explores how politeness and impoliteness is realised through linguistic and paralinguistic features in Korean discourse where appropriate uses of honorifics and speech levels have been mainly discussed as the sociolinguistic rules to express politeness. As an attempt to understand (im)politeness at a level of expressing epistemic stance and attributing credit to interlocutors as discursive strategies, not just at a level of grammar of honorifics, the current research project will contribute to expanding the meaning of (im)politeness in the Korean language.

Expected outcomes and deliverables:

Students participating in this project will gain research skills in discourse analysis including data collection and analysis. They will have opportunity to learn relevant theories and concepts in pragmatics, sociolinguistics and discourse analysis, so they can develop their own research topics based on the knowledge gained from this project.

Suitable for:

This project is open to applications from any UQ enrolled students with high proficiency in the Korean language and an interest in socio-cultural understanding of languages.
