10. Building an electronic Kukatja language corpus
Project duration:
8 weeks
23 November to 18 December 2020
11 January to 5 February 2021
Description:
This project involves the construction of an online corpus of Kukatja, a Wati language spoken in Wirrimanu, Western Australia. The data originates in three fieldtrips conducted by Dr Luis Miguel Rojas-Berscia and the available dictionary and materials produced by the Wakala Language Centre.
The finalised corpus will be made available to the Kukatja community in Wirrimanu (Balgo) and will be used for the study of contact phenomena and the development of a formal account of the language in terms of Semantic Syntax (SeSyn).
Number of hours per week:
20 hours per week
Expected outcomes and deliverables:
Summer Research scholars will gain hands on experience in using ELAN, a language copora annotation software common to the field of language description and developed by the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics. The scholars will also become familiar with language elicitation tools and contemporary formalisms. The end result will be a searchable diachronic Kukatja corpus and a chapter co-authored by all scholars on the complementation system of Kukatja.
