Project profile:

COVID-19 considerations:  The project can be completed under a remote working arrangement but with occasional face to face meetings by arrangement.

Description:

This project aims to investigate the dominant ideologies and values that are integrated in school textbooks used in China and South Korea. Using CDA, this project critically analyses texts and images in South Korean and Chinese textbooks for primary and secondary school.  Textbooks are known to promote and legitimise government ruling ideologies. Through this project, I will look into how school textbooks portray the critical issues such as identities, environmental issues and government ruling ideologies, and whose interests they portray.

The students will have the opportunity to translate Chinese and Korean textbooks into English and Chinese, and Korean scholarly articles into English. They will learn how to analyse textbooks critically, and learn the dominant ruling ideologies and the underlying messages which are unsaid as well.
