8. Quantitative and qualitative data management in language studies

Description:

Project background:

Lots of data have been collected in several projects (e.g., heritage Korean language maintenance, KFL learners’ anxiety and enjoyment, EFL learners’ motivation/demotivation). The data consisted of quantitative and qualitative via survey, interview and short-answer questions. 

Expected tasks:

  • Compiling the survey responses into Excel and Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS)
  • Running descriptive data analysis, correlations, and Structural Equation Modelling (SEM)
  • Summarising the findings with proper interpretations of statistical analysis
  • Compiling the interview and short-answer responses (in Korean and English) and finding the main topics/themes for qualitative analysis

Number of hours per week: 

20 hours per week (80 in total) 

Expected outcomes and deliverables:

Scholars may gain skills in data compiling and analysis using Excel and SPSS and have an opportunity to interpret the findings in an academic way (i.e., social science). Scholars will learn how to conduct statistical analysis using SPSS (quantitative) and content analysis for qualitative data. They will also be asked to produce a summary of findings by the end of the project.   

Since the project is to promote students’ research experience, no authorship will be given for any publication using the data.

Suitable for:

This project is open to applications from students with:

  • High-intermediate (or above) level of Korean proficiency (for written data in Korean)
  • An ability to type Korean letters on keyboard
  • UQ enrolled students only, 3-4 year student
  • (+, if the student has a background in language education or applied linguistics)
  • (+, if the student has an experience of using SPSS)
