6. Sensing Australia’s Living heritage

Project duration:

The project will run for 4 weeks and can be conducted under a remote working arrangement.

Description:

Living heritage is about “the practices, representations, expressions, knowledge and skills handed down from generation to generation. This heritage provides communities with a sense of identity and is continuously recreated in response to their environment.” (UNESCO 2003). Taking this notion of Living heritage, the project aims to explore how historically Food or Culinary has been discussed and presented in Australia and how that is a reflection of our cultural and social history. The project is designed to explore issues relevant to an understanding of international cultural influences on Australian society. The project involves data collection of historical material.

Expected outcomes and deliverables:

Students will gain skills in data collection, searching historical material and using databases and be involved in specific tasks such as compiling, summarising and writing reports. Students will also have an opportunity to further develop critical thinking and explore new ways of looking at the society in the past.

Number of hours per week: 

35 hours

Suitable for:

The students will need to be proficient in using Endnote and Excel as well as willing to learn to use new software when required. The students should have demonstrated ability to write coherent, structured, and clearly referenced material, in report writing, the creation of annotated bibliography and data management. Preferably, students would have conducted some historical study, familiar with searching of historical material, the use of database and library resources. Ideally, have knowledge of data visualisation. Suitable for students who is in 3rd or 4th year and beyond.
