5. Politeness strategies in Korean: Analysing spoken discourse in the socio-cultural context
Project duration:
5 Weeks.
COVID-19 considerations: The project can be completed under a remote working arrangement but with occasional face to face meetings by arrangement.
Description:
Politeness has been a popular topic in linguistics, and many studies have noted the significance of socio-cultural backgrounds in its understanding while others seek to find a universal politeness theory. This project will explore the politeness strategies linguistically implemented in Korean, e.g. how Korean speakers express (im)politeness using or deliberately not using particular expressions or grammatical structure. By analysing spoken corpora, we focus on the pragmatic use of grammatical items in the expression of (im)politeness and examine the effects of interactional aspects of spoken discourse.
Expected outcomes and deliverables:
Scholars participating in this project will gain research skills in discourse analysis including data collection and transcription. Scholars will also have an opportunity to learn relevant theories and concepts in pragmatics and discourse analysis so they can develop their own research topics based on the knowledge gained from this project.
