The overall focus of this new major is on the use of English not only in traditional monolingual, native speaker interactions, but also in multilingual, intercultural settings, as migration, mobility, and interconnection are increasingly common features of social and work life across the globe. The major will provide an opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of the ways in which English is used as a global means of communication, foster communication skills for the multilingual workplace, and will offer a coherent progression through courses on intercultural communication, second language acquisition, multilingualism, language change, and translation and interpreting.
Student who take English as an International Language as single or extended major will:
- Gain an advanced understanding of different Englishes around the world;
- Extend their ability to communicate across a wide range of contexts;
- Increase their capacity to use English in multilingual and international settings;
- Understand the complex relationship between language, culture and identity;
- Develop advanced cultural and linguistic skills that are critical to success in a globalised workforce.
