Call for Papers/Roundtables
2025 theme: Strengthening Asian language communities: Language, Identity, and Cultural Sustainability
We are pleased to announce the call for papers/roundtables for the 3rd Empowering Asian Language Speakers Symposium, supported by the Campbell Bequest and School of Languages and Cultures, The University of Queensland. This annual event, themed “Strengthening Asian Language Communities: Language, Identity, and Cultural Sustainability” in 2025, invites university academics, researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and community members to contribute their insights and solutions to the challenges faced by Asian language communities in Australia. It seeks to highlight the strategic importance of Asian languages and contribute to linguistic diversity and multiculturism in the Australian society.
This symposium will focus on:
- the challenges faced by Asian language communities in Australia
- strategies for sustaining Asian languages and maintaining and developing cultural identities
- the role of language education in promoting Asian languages in Australia
- policy implications and community initiatives
We also welcome proposals on topics beyond those listed above.
We invite abstract submissions for individual or collaborative papers, as well as roundtables. Please submit a 200-word abstract by Friday, May 30th, 5pm (AEST) via this link. While in-person presentations are preferred, online (Zoom) presentations are also welcome.
Selected proceedings from the symposium may be considered for publication as an edited book or a journal special issue.
For PhD students, three travel scholarships are available for presenters who live outside Greater Brisbane. Each successful applicant will receive $1,000 for travel and accommodation. Please submit a 200-word statement explaining why you should receive the scholarship along with a proof of current enrolment of PhD program.
The symposium will be held at The University of Queensland, St. Lucia Campus (Room 14-132) on Friday, July 4th, from 9:00am to 4:30pm.
