Abstract: This study investigates the dominant ideologies and cultural values in English textbooks used in North Korea. Utilising the method of critical discourse analysis (CDA) and visual ihongmage analysis (VIA), this analysis aims to identify specific dominant ideologies and cultural values that are covertly represented in North Korean English textbooks as hidden curriculum and selective traditions which re-utilises and continuously maintain a certain power balance. Furthermore, the study will further identify whether a particular culture is more emphasised in the North Korean curriculum and whether nationalism and deification of the Kim family firmly remain amid the change of leadership.
