5. Translating Maïa Alonso’s 2017 Novel, Le Rêve assassiné

Project duration: 4 weeks (24 June - 19 July 2019) 22 hours per week

Description: 

The goal of this project is to manage the translation of a Maïa Alonso’s French novel Le Rêve assassiné (2017) into English. Various portions of the novel have already been translated and the winter research scholar will be tasked with resolving outstanding translation issues, ensuring a unified style throughout the text, and contributing to the final translation for publication by Editions AtlantiS. 

Expected outcomes and deliverables:

This project will give the scholar real insight into the translation profession and more specifically into literary translation. In addition to building competence in French and English vocabulary and grammar, the project will allow the scholar to explore issues of style and register. Research will be required to resolve specific cultural and linguistic issues in the text, allowing the scholar to build competent translation strategies. The scholar will be credited in the final publication of the novel for their contributions.

Suitable for: 

Applicants should have C1 proficiency in both French and English (FREN3114 and up) with experience in translation either through coursework (FREN3310, LTCS3002) or professional practice. Knowledge of French literature is highly desired (FREN3210, FREN3350, etc). The ideal applicant will have knowledge of the French colonisation of Algeria and the Algerian War, demonstrated strengths in French and English grammar, excellent time management, an ability to conduct independent research, and excellent communication skills. The project will require decision making, incorporating feedback, and consistent attention to spelling, punctuation and formatting. Therefore, a scholar who can demonstrate strong editorial skills will be preferred.
