How to apply

1. Locating and analysing Aboriginal language data in UQ- and SLQ-held audio tapes.

Project duration: 4 weeks (24 June - 19 July 2019) 25 hours per week

Description:

UQ and SLQ hold a number of tapes with recordings that include snippets of languages traditionally spoken in the Brisbane area. The set of tapes that are the focus of this project include primarily Yagara and Yugambeh-Bandjalang language data, though some songs may be from other languages. Successful applicant(s) will be provided with a selection of materials, including databases, to help identify and interpret the languages in the recordings.

Expected outcomes and deliverables:

Processing the recordings will involve three types of task. One, we will collect and collate additional materials such as word lists in archived newspapers, and add these to the existing databases. Two, we will match the languages in the recordings against these and the previously collected materials. Three, we will use these materials to translate any recognisable morphemes in the recordings.Depending on the interests and aptitudes of the applicant(s), these three tasks may be divided in various ways between the supervisor and the applicant(s).
