6. Socio-pragmatic understanding of (im)politeness in spoken Korean discourse

Project title:

Socio-pragmatic understanding of (im)politeness in spoken Korean discourse

Project duration, hours of engagement & delivery mode

  • 10 weeks (28 November – 16 December 2022; 2 January – 17 February 2023)
  • 25 hours per week
  • The project can be completed under a remote working arrangement but with occasional face to face meetings by arrangement.

Description:

This project explores how (im)politeness is realised through different speech acts in spoken Korean discourse where appropriate uses of honorifics and speech levels have been mainly discussed as the sociolinguistic rules to express politeness. As an attempt to understand (im)politeness at a level of expressing epistemic stance and attributing credit to interlocutors as discursive strategies, not just at a level of grammar of honorifics, the current research project will contribute to expanding the meaning of (im)politeness in the Korean language.

Expected outcomes and deliverables:

Scholars participating in this project will gain research skills in discourse analysis including data collection, transcription and analysis. They will have opportunity to learn relevant theories and concepts in pragmatics, sociolinguistics and discourse analysis so they can develop their own research topics based on the knowledge gained from this project.

Suitable for:

This project is open to applications from any UQ enrolled students with native or near native level proficiency in Korean and an interest in linguistics and socio-cultural understanding of language.
