Transnational Art Flows: Japanese Visual Culture in Australia is a one-day symposium to be held at The University of Queensland on Friday 13 November 2026 (9am to 5pm).

Bringing together scholars, curators, and artists, the symposium explores encounters and exchanges between Japan and Australia in the visual arts, from the late nineteenth century to the present. Together, these encounters position Japanese visual culture as a constitutive rather than incidental presence in Australia’s visual history.

The programme combines academic and curatorial presentations with a keynote address by Professor Melissa Miles (Monash University), a musical performance by Linsey Pollak and Takako Haggarty, the premiere of a short documentary, and a keynote performance by multidisciplinary artist Hiromi Tango.
