The School of Languages and Cultures is offering a two-day workshop at The University of Queensland St Lucia campus on Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 September (School Term break & UQ mid-term break) for QLD school Japanese language teachers to enhance teaching and language skills at all levels. The workshop provides opportunities to reflect on pedagogy as well as to brush up on Japanese, inspired and/or prompted by various activities using some of the university course materials.

The workshop is organised by the School of Languages and Cultures and generously funded by the J M Campbell Bequest.

Participants: The workshop is open to all secondary-school Japanese teachers in QLD (state, independent, and private). Both full-time and part-time teachers are eligible. Limit to one teacher per school. Participants must be able to attend both days (9am - 4pm; Lunch will be provided). This is a free workshop with no participation fee.

Scholarships: Travel support ($500 x 5 teachers) will be available for teachers from regions more than 500 km away from Brisbane.

Program: The workshop will include one talk on assessment literacy (by Associate Prof Noriko Iwashita) and five topic-based activities, e. g. ‘Understanding grammar from points of view’; ‘Writing practices with peers’; ‘Shadowing for improving speaking skill’; ‘“Interpreting technique for presentation’; and ‘Self-study online platform for Kanji learning’. It will conclude with a Q & A session. The workshop will be delivered by staff members of UQ Japanese language program (Dr Sanako Mitsugi, Dr Kayoko Hashimoto, and Dr Rika Kusunoki).

Application: The application form includes questions for the participants. There is only space for 40 applicants to attend.
